Akbar Hasan has been a dedicated visual storyteller since 2015, establishing himself as a prominent figure in Dubai’s creative landscape. With a passion for narrative-driven art, he has achieved several milestones that have positioned him as a key contributor to the region’s growing comic book industry.
Born and brought up in Dubai, Akbar Hasan graduated from the American University of Sharjah and Missouri Southern State University, Akbar’s academic background has provided him with a strong foundation in visual arts and storytelling. His expertise has been honed through his work with Abu Dhabi-based Sandstorm Comics, a pioneering comics studio dedicated to nurturing local talent, developing unique intellectual properties, and advancing the work of regional content creators. Sandstorm Comics serves as a platform for authentic and original stories from the Middle East, offering a space where diverse voices can be heard.
As part of Abu Dhabi’s AED 30 billion Culture and Creative Industries (CCI) Strategy, Sandstorm Comics plays a vital role in connecting emerging authors with publishers, industry mentors, and world-renowned studios. This initiative underscores the significance of storytelling in shaping cultural identity and fostering creative expression in the region.
Beyond his contributions to Sandstorm Comics, Akbar has also made his mark on the international stage. As a comic book creator, he has collaborated with Marvel Comics, one of the most renowned names in the industry. His work includes the publication of Lacrimosa, which is available on Amazon, further expanding his global reach. His intricate illustrations and compelling narratives have garnered praise from audiences who appreciate the depth and artistry of his storytelling.
Visual Storyteller
Akbar’s commitment to visual storytelling extends beyond traditional comic books. He was a key collaborator in the New Normal Sketchbook project by the White Lines Collective, an initiative supported by Tashkeel. Launched in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, this project documented personal narratives and experiences of young individuals aged 18-26. Through co-creation, collaboration, and participatory design, the New Normal Sketchbook provided a creative outlet for individuals to share their pandemic experiences visually, fostering a sense of community and resilience during challenging times.
He has also worked with leading TV production houses like First and Ten Productions where he worked on developing film concepts for high profile clients such as NAFFCO, Ferrari, Starbucks, and Shoemart.
In addition to his creative projects, Akbar has actively engaged with the global comic book community. He attended New York Comic Con, one of the largest pop culture conventions in the world, where he showcased his work and connected with fellow comic book creators from across the globe. His participation in such international events highlights his dedication to expanding the presence of Middle Eastern storytelling in the global market.
