Bangkok is a city steeped in wonderful history and unique neighbourhoods to discover. This growing metropolis is also known as the “Venice of the East” for its intricate canal systems created to support the city’s commerce and transportation dating back to its foundation. This network of canals still plays an equally important role today and the area known as the Pratunam or in English, Watergate, and home to the Amari Watergate Bangkok, is part of this important system in the middle of one the city’s most bustling commercial district.
The Holiday Guide team stayed in Amari Watergate Bangkok as part of a Familiarisation Trip for journalists from the Middle East that was organised by Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) way back in 2003. As we entered the hotel, we were warmly welcomed by the then Director of Communications, Alex Constantine who showed us around the property. Our husband-wife team stayed at the Amari Watergate for 10 days and were really impressed by the service level and the modern amenities on offer. In my 30 years working as a journalist in Dubai, I have grown up seeing the glitz and glamour of the Dubai life. However, staying at Amari Watergate was an experience that I still cherish – the hotel as an aura of class and the service staff are well trained, polite and ever helping. So, going back to Amari Watergate, after so many years, was a trip down memory lane for us.
Entering the hotel, guests will be greeted by the sleek lobby awash with warm earth tones, at its heart is the streams of lights cascading from the lighting sculpture featuring 847 pieces of hand crafted Murano glass signifying the hotels street address 847 Petchburi Road. The installation is reminiscent of falling rain and titled “Water of Life”, inspired by the hotel’s location and the significance water is to this city and to Thai culture.
